Quartz comes in many colors and there are two possible reasons for the brown shades. The presence of aluminum particles in the mineral may contribute to the color, but irradiation from the earth may also be the cause. It could also be a little bit of both. In the lab, colorless quartz is sometimes irradiated to pull out the brown hues.
